GREEN ROOF: PROPOSED DESIGNS

There are a multitude of designs implications that go into creating a green roof. Whether it be the types of plants used, materials used, or position on roof; all of these aspects are important to a successful green roof. In this section the specific details of our green roof are presented.

PROJECT CONSIDERATIONS

Green roof installation requires a plan. Certain factors need to be considered when deciding whether to install a green roof on your home or building

  1. LOCATION - Understand the climate of your city. Select the plants that are appropriate to that climate to create the most effective roof.

  2. SLOPE - Consider the slope of the roof you are working with. The roof will be load bearing, and if the slope is greater than 10 degrees, then actions have to be taken to maintain the integrity of both the roof and the additions.

  3. MAINTENANCE - When selecting plants, it is best to select low maintenance plants such as thymes and spruces that will allow your roof to thrive without constant attention.

  4. DRAINAGE - It is crucial to include a drainage layer. Drainage allows for the roof to keep from retaining too much water. Large amounts of water can increase the load weight on the roof. Drainage protects the roof from damage.
